Dubai’s new system of trams goes operational. There are about 150 police officers and 64 speed cameras that are trying to keep the trams apart from the cars as the system takes off.

Stretching up to 10.6 Km, 14-station network, and the tram is sure to provide better travel experience for the city dwellers and those who drop in for a visit.

The drivers have been warned to drive cautiously or else they would be fined 30,000 dirham ($8,160; £5150) if they cause a fatal crash at any one of the 30 junctions.

Pedestrians and cyclists too will be fined 1,000 dirhams ($270; £170) for crossing the tram lines. Prohibited areas will have to be avoided as the trams cannot be swerved.

The trams will be gender segregated with cabins set aside for women and children and there will be a separate car for “gold class” passengers. The tram has a capacity to carry 27,000 people. The tram is catering to only a few destinations in Dubai so it will only help is distributing the passenger thrust from just a few areas.

The trams will operate for 19 hours a day, Saturday to Thursday, from 6.30am to 1:30am, and from 9am to 1:30am on Friday, according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
